Foreword

This website is for you, whether you are a patient, a physical therapist, or a doctor. The site is designed to help you better understand problems with the knees and shoulders. My focus is on helping patients lead more active lives with less pain. I also want you to feel at ease. I strive to provide optimal care using the most modern treatment methods.

The page contains a lot of technical terms, but I hope it’s still easy to read. The page is available in several languages because I have quite a few patients from abroad. As a patient, it’s a really good idea to familiarize yourself with your condition so that you can take responsibility for getting the right treatment.

Today, I am an experienced sports surgeon who has seen and tried most things. For more than 30 years I have performed a large number of operations and reconstructions in knees and shoulders etc. You can read about my many professional and scientific achievements click here. Today, I only work at Aleris Hospital Søborg, and I am affiliated with Køge Hospital as a researcher.

Several specific pages focus on patella-related problems because this has been my area of interest and research since my medical studies. As one of very few surgeons in the world, I perform surgery on patients with anterior knee pain. Internationally, I have been recognized for developing the “arthroscopic trochleoplasty” procedure. Consultation

If after reading something on this website that makes you want to schedule a consultation with me, there are two options.

Aleris Hospital Søborg

The possibility now is that you can call and book an appointment for a consultation at Aleris Hospital Søborg without a referral. It is a private hospital where you either pay yourself or your health insurance. You may also be referred via an assessment or treatment guarantee from your region.

You don’t need a doctor’s referral to visit a private hospital – just book an appointment. If you want to come via health insurance, you need permission from your insurance company, which usually requires a referral from your own doctor. A preliminary examination costs approximately 1350 kr.

Second opinion

Even if you’re not having surgery at a private hospital, getting a second opinion can be a good investment. It costs about 3,500 DKK, and during the consultation, an assessment is performed of, for example, your knee or shoulder. I’ll examine you again and review your previous scans and X-rays (if you’ve been able to obtain them). It’s a lot of money, but it could make a difference for the rest of your life. A new examination and a fresh review of your MRI scan often lead to a new treatment plan and greater certainty.

Important

If you come to me for a preliminary examination, it is important that we have the MRI scan entered into our pacs system, which is our local image processing system. Unfortunately, we don’t have automatic access to scans performed at other hospitals. It’s not enough for me to read the description of your MRI scan – I need to see the images for myself! You will need to ask our secretary to request the MRI scan from the hospital where the scan was performed.

Waiting time

Unfortunately, I have some waiting time at Aleris Hospital (weeks). It’s better to wait a little longer, even though you obviously feel it’s urgent, it’s rare that there are conditions where it’s medically urgent within my field of work.

Prices for surgeries

How much does it cost to have surgery in a private hospital. Many people have a perception that it’s very expensive, but considering how many people are involved in an operation and how much disposable equipment is used, it’s not that expensive. Here are some approximate prices. A meniscus operation costs approx. 19,000 DKK, reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament costs approx. 33,000 DKK, a space-creating operation in the shoulder costs approx. 23,000 DKK. A surgery typically involves 2 surgical nurses, a nurse anesthetist, an anesthesiologist, a recovery nurse, a medical secretary and a surgeon, and often more.

Being a great orthopedic surgeon

A common misconception is that an orthopedic surgeon treats simple conditions in, for example, the knees and shoulders. It’s a bit like being a mechanic. There’s a very good reason why it takes so many years to complete the training. The training continues until you reach retirement age as an orthopedic surgeon. It’s not like installing a new kitchen or repairing a car. What about simply relying on ChatGPT or other AI chatbots? That’s certainly a good starting point, but it can’t stand alone just yet. Assessing a condition based on symptoms, duration, physical examination, tests, X-rays, and scans can be complicated. For some patients, surgery may be necessary. For example, it’s not “just” a matter of implanting a new cruciate ligament—many assessments are made before and during the operation. Even though I’ve been in the field for many years, I still need to keep learning because the field is evolving rapidly. That’s why I travel a lot, read extensively, conduct research, and constantly consult with colleagues abroad. I often hear people say, “I’d rather be operated on by someone who’s a skilled surgeon than by someone who’s highly educated.” This is, of course, an obvious point, but even if you’re skilled with your hands, that doesn’t mean you’re a skilled surgeon. To be a skilled surgeon, you must also stay up to date professionally, know the latest techniques, and much more—but of course, you won’t become a good surgeon unless you’ve also got the right touch.

This is a hobby website, free of advertising and which I 100% edit and finalize myself. It started many years ago when I wanted to raise awareness for arthroscopic trochleoplasty, which was the operation I developed in 2007. Over the following years, the site has gradually expanded to include more and more topics that patients have requested. I often hear from patients that they have found information here that they couldn’t find anywhere else. My grammar skills are poor and therefore you will have to bear with mistakes or write to me and ask me to correct them. Unfortunately, some of the pages are not fully updated.
