In May 2024 a book about trochlear dysplasia authored by me was released.

It is a science-based review including historical background, etiology, evaluation, and management of trochlear dysplasia. Click here to read more

I became a specialist in orthopedic surgery in 2001 and today I am a consultant at Aleris Hospital Søborg and at Zealand University Hospital, Køge. I am also  a consultant at the Danish Patient Safety Authority.

This website is for you, whether you are a patient, physiotherapist or doctor. My reason for creating this website is to help you better understand this rather complicated area around the knees and shoulders. My primary goal is to help patients live a more active life with less pain. I also want to help you feel safe. Of course, you also need optimal treatment, using the most modern treatments.

On the many subpages you can read a lot about knee and shoulder disorders. Sometimes I use a lot of technical terms, but I hope it’s still readable. As you may notice, the site is available in many languages and that’s because I have a lot of patients from abroad.

About Lars Blønd

In addition to the above, I am a certified sports medicine physician and an experienced sports surgeon. For more than 30 years, I have performed a large number of surgeries and reconstructions in knees, shoulders, etc. You can read about my many professional and scientific achievements click here.  My main employment is at Aleris Hospital Søborg and I am also a consultant at Køge Hospital (leave of absence from Køge Hospital from May 31, 2024 to May 31, 2025). I also work for the Danish Patient Health Authorities, where I assess special appeal cases as an orthopedic surgeon.

I am also a consultant for an American/German company called Arthrex. Here I help to train foreign doctors etc. As a result of many travels, international colleagues and countless congress participations, I am up to date on the most modern treatment principles and technologies and am also still research active – click here.

Several specific pages deal with patella-related problems because this has been my interest and research area since medical school. Among other things, I have developed the operation“arthroscopic trochleoplasty”. If you are a foreign patient, you can read about “Arthroscopic deepening trochleoplasty”

As mentioned, you can read about many of the common knee and shoulder conditions.

If after reading something on this website that makes you want to schedule a consultation with me, there are two options.

Køge Hospital

Until now, you could get your own doctor to refer you to Køge Hospital, but now I’m on leave until May 31, 2025.

Aleris Hospital Søborg

The possibility now is that you can call and book an appointment for a consultation at Aleris Hospital Søborg without a referral. It is a private hospital where you either pay yourself or your health insurance. You may also be referred via an assessment or treatment guarantee from your region.

You don’t need a referral from a doctor to go to a private hospital, such as what is known as a “self-referral”. If you want to come via health insurance, you need permission from your insurance company, which usually requires a referral from your own doctor. A preliminary examination costs about 1300 DKK.

Second opinion

Even if you’re not having surgery at a private hospital, a second opinion can be a good investment, even if it costs around 2,500 DKK. It can be a relatively small expense for something that can have an impact on the rest of your life. Re-examining you and reviewing your MRI scan sometimes leads to a new plan and sometimes to peace of mind.

If you come to me for a preliminary examination, it is important that we have the MRI scan entered into our pacs system, which is our local image processing system. Unfortunately, we don’t have automatic access to scans performed at other hospitals. It’s not enough for me to read the description of your MRI scan – I need to see the images for myself! You will need to ask our secretary to request the MRI scan from the hospital where the scan was performed.

Waiting time

Unfortunately, I can have some waiting time both at Aleris Hospital (weeks) and at Køge Hospital (months). It’s better to wait a little longer, even though you obviously feel it’s urgent, it’s rare that there are conditions where it’s medically urgent within my field of work.

Prices for surgeries

How much does it cost to have surgery in a private hospital. Many people have a perception that it’s very expensive, but considering how many people are involved in an operation and how much disposable equipment is used, it’s not that expensive. Here are some approximate prices. A meniscus operation costs approx. 19,000 DKK, reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament costs approx. 33,000 DKK, a space-creating operation in the shoulder costs approx. 23,000 DKK. A surgery typically involves 2 surgical nurses, a nurse anesthetist, an anesthesiologist, a recovery nurse, a medical secretary and a surgeon, and often more.

Being a great orthopedic surgeon

A common perception is that an orthopaedic surgeon treats simple ailments such as knees and shoulders. A bit like being a mechanic. There’s a very good reason why it takes so many years to get an education. Training continues until you reach retirement age as an orthopaedic surgeon. It’s not like changing a caburator. Assessing a condition based on symptoms, duration, examination, tests, x-rays and scans can be complicated. For some patients, this may involve surgery. For example, it’s not “just” putting in a new ACL – many assessments are made before and during surgery. Even though I’ve been in the industry for many years, I still need to learn more because it’s evolving so quickly. That’s why I travel a lot, read a lot, do research and constantly confer with foreign colleagues.
